The Amherstburg Stars won the 2010 Fort
Erie Tournament this past weekend, defeating the previously unbeaten
Welland Tigers 3-0. Dershahn Stewart recorded his 3rd shutout of the
tournament in the championship game.
In the semi-final vrs Oshawa, Joey Corio got the equalizer half-way through the second period, with assist going to Hunter Gault and Bryce McGregor. The Stars got the game winner after David Desormeaux won the draw to Savannah Bouzide who wristed a shot past the Oshawa net minder.
In the finals, the Stars faced the heavily favoured Welland Tigers, who had also gone unbeaten throughout the tournament. The Welland team had not trailed in any game, until Franco Morrone made a pinpoint pass to Jack Jasey who broke through the Welland defense and opened the scoring half way through the 1st period. The Stars forwards and defense smothered the stunned Welland Tigers, and persistence paid off as Desormeaux scored the 2nd goal of the game on a 3 on 1 break with assists from line mates Morrone and Jasey. Desormeaux closed out the scoring with an empty net goal late in the 3rd, with assists going to Jacob DeLuca and Jasey.
The Stars defense and net minder were tremendous all weekend allowing only 3 goals, and limiting their opponents chances time and again. Solid defensive performances were turned in by captain DeLuca, Keegan MacVoy, Marcus Slipchuk, Trevor Beneteau, Bouzide and Gault. Deluca and Slipchuk also added to the scoring in the 6-0 win against the Toronto Ice Dogs Friday night.
The Stars forwards played intense back and forth hockey, with every forward contributing to the 19 goal tally and success of the team. The players up front include Zack Bozin, Andre Tomasian, and Colin Kwiatkowski who not only contributed on the score sheet, but whose tenacity frustrated their opponents. Line mates McGregor, Gault and Corio kept the opponents at bay with precise passing and gritty play. The line of Desormeaux, Morrone and Jasey led the way with crushing body checks and saved their best game for the championship. Morrone led the team with hits over the weekend.
The coaches couldn’t be more proud of the effort turned in by every player – it was truly a team effort, and the best hockey played by the Stars to date.
