The Amherstburg Select 7 Stars put forth a strong effort for most of the game but were unable to keep pace with the Chatham Maroons.
The game started out well for the Stars with Sebastien Tronchin opening the scoring at just 1:56 of the first period when he scored on a nice forehand shot with a Chatham player hanging all over him. Then at the other end of the ice, Jayden Duchesne came up with two beautiful saves at 2:02 and 2:50 of the first to keep the Maroons off the board. After these two saves, the Stars were handling and controlling the puck extremely well and kept it in the Maroon’s end but could not manage to get a shot on goal. Then at 5:36, the Maroons were able to break out of their end and get a good shot off that beat Duchesne to tie the game at 1-1. From the face-off, the Stars again gained control of the puck and kept it in the Maroon’s end of the ice until 9:45 when the Maroons were able to break free and scored another goal to make it 2-1.
The second period was a bit more back and forth. Drew Booker got a nice shot off just 30 seconds into the period. Jayden Duchesne came up with another nice save at 1:26 to prevent the Maroons from extending their lead. Sebastien Tronchin fed a nice pass to the front of the net at 1:50 but was unable to connect with anyone. Duchesne came up big again at 3:09 when he kicked out the left pad and robbed the Maroon forward of a sure goal. The game then went into a defensive battle as the next shot on net didn’t come until 8:45 when Duchesne, with a little help from his friend, Mr. Cross Bar, continued to keep the Maroons from increasing their lead. Just 1:12 later, Jake Orchard found himself in the left slot and fired a wrist shot that just missed the right side of the net. Brock Boyko saw his first action at 10:55 of the second when he made a nice stick save and then came up with another nice save at 11:35. Just 11 seconds after that save, Noah Duggan, this week’s hard hat award winner, made a gorgeous pass to a streaking Sebastien Tronchin who buried a shot from the right wing to tie the game up at 2-2. Unfortunately, the tie did not last long as immediately after the ensuing face-off, the Maroons took possession of the puck and were able to get two scoring chances on Boyko who was not able to stop the second one. The second period ended with the Maroons up 3-2.
The third period was mostly controlled by the Maroons as the Stars only managed to get 2 shots on net compared to the Maroons 12, which they scored 7 goals on.
Though the final score ended up being 10-2 in favour of the Maroons, the Stars played a great, hard fought game and with if few breaks would have went their way in the first 2 periods, I believe the outcome would have been dramatically different.
This week’s feature player is Jayden Duchesne. Jayden is a fantastic goalie who is always in the right position, moves within the crease extremely well and welcomes any opposing player to attempt their fate against his statuesque figure.
