Amherstburg Midget Minor's find success in weekend series!
The Amherstburg Stars hit the ice at the WFCU on Friday determined to succeed.

Cory Burns lead the evening's goals by solidly placing the puck in Riverside's net assisted by Kyle Fockens and Spencer Benevenuto, late in the first period. Cory would again score late in the second with an odd angled shot from the corner assisted by Kane Morneau and Ryan Wismer.  Brent Allen fought hard for his team behind the net and Avery Brush was faithful battling hard against the boards.  Heading into the third period Riverside was able to equal the score early.  Mid-period, Amherstburg took the lead again thanks to Ryan Wismer with assistance from Spencer Benvenuto and Cory Burns.  It was a battle to the end of regulation when Riverside scored with 1:12 left in the third and forcing overtime.  A well fought ten minutes of overtime left Amherstburg and Riverside tied and gaining one point each in this series.  Amherstburg recorded their most shots on net this hockey season with 25 shots against Riverside's goalie. Star's goalie Wes Werner got the tie after a strong game.
On Saturday evening, Amherstburg faced Riverside on their home ice.  Scoring for Amherstburg started early as Cory Burns found the back of Riverside's net within the first minute of regulation, unassisted.  Michael Lenson and Braeden Derksen stood tall as they were able to clear the puck and flex their defensive strength.  Mitch Holden and Garrett Meloche dug in the corners to provide extra opportunity to Amherstburg's offence.  Despite the pressure back and forth there would be no more scoring until the third period.  Riverside scored early in the third but was answered quickly by a powerful shot from Kyle Fockens from the blue line and tipped in by Kane Morneau.  Unfortunately Riverside quickly tied it up once again forcing another overtime game.  Less than two minutes into overtime Cory Burns sealed the win for Amherstburg with an unassisted goal.  Amherstburg tied their record shots on Riverside's goalie while Josh Paquette made 27 saves for the win. Amherstburg now leads the series.  The action continues Thursday, February 7th, at 8:55pm at the WFCU when these teams face off again once more.  Go Stars!
