NotesBantam Minor 97 Star's brought home an key victory last night by defeating Belle River 3-2 and gaining two very valuable points. The 97's and the Canadiens battled back and forth during the first frame to end up scoreless. The Star's goalie #30 Werner came up with several huge saves throughout the contest and definitely played a major role in the eventual outcome. In the second period after a flurry of activity at the Belle River net, the puck popped out into the slot and #4 Derksen stepped up and drove home the opening goal assisted by #8 Holden. The Star's continued to play hard and keep the pressure on, later in the second #88 Dennis scored from a helper provided by #25 Damico. The Star's lead the game 2-0 heading into the intermission. As the third period started the Canadien's as expected came out hard to attempt to regain control. Midway through the period Belle River scored two goals 30 seconds apart to tie the game. Amherstburg would not be denied however. After fighting off numerous shorthanded situations to stay on top, the Star's would not leave without a "W" on this day. As the 97's applied wave after wave of pressure against Belle River, a scramble occured in front of Belle River's net leaving a puck laying alone in front of the Canadien's crease. Fortunately, Amherstburg's #9 Burns was the perfect person to find the puck as he made no mistake in burying it top shelf for the game winning goal, assisted once again by #8 Holden. The 97 Star's continued to show composure holding off the Canadiens who pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. The game ended with Amherstburg taking home the win, now stepping ahead of Tecumseh in the standings. The victory is an important step toward catching Belle River for the fourth place position and qualifying for post season play! The 97 Star's will now gear up for a critical weekend home at home series versus Riverside Rangers. Final Score 97 Star's 3-2 over Belle River. GO STARS !!!
