The Amherstburg Stars Novice Major hockey team went to Niagara Falls/St.
Catherines this past weekend for the Garden City Early Bird Tournament.
From the opening face-off to the final buzzer, the entire team was firing on all cylinders and came away with the Championship medals.
The Stars roared their way to an opening 11-1 victory vs. the Niagara Falls Canucks and followed that up with a 7-4 victory over the Woolwich Wildcats. The third game saw the Stars tie a very strong Cumberland Grads team 2-2. The Stars then finished off the round robin play with a 10-3 victory over the St. Catharines Warriors to finish with a 3-0-1 record and first place in the round robin.
The finals were played on Sunday morning at 10:15am against the Cumberland Grads, who were also undefeated in round robin play. The Stars started strong and skated their way to an opening period lead of 2-0. The Grads clawed their way back in the second and tied the score at 2-2. The third period was a great display of team effort which lifted the Stars to a 4-2 victory and the Championship medals.
The Stars played the entire weekend as a team and showed their depth. Nothing supports this more than the fact that every forward on the team scored at least 1 goal and 5 different players recorded a hat trick. Also, the Stars were backstopped with some outstanding goaltending and defense, finishing the weekend with a 2.4 goals against average and only giving up the lead one time - for less than 5 minutes - the entire tournament.
Congratulations to all players on an outstanding TEAM effort! Keep up the hard work!
