Midget Major Stars dominate Rangers in 7-2 win
The Amherstburg Stars midget major team got off on the right skate last Saturday night by potting four first period goals and cruised to a 7-2 victory in their six-point series opener over the Riverside Rangers. With Thomas Demarco getting the nod to defend the twine, it was the offense’s turn to shine as the Stars’ forwards were having their way with the Ranger defenders as they were coming out on top of the puck possession game in the first period. A quick pass from Ryan Wismer to Cory Burns led to Burns’ shot being denied but the loose rubber laying alone in the crease was driven into the back of the open net by shifty Michael Ciccone and the hometown squad was up one only six minutes in.
The Stars would strike for a pair of goals only 11 seconds apart as defenseman Sean Santarossa sent an outlet pass to Mitch Holden and Holden would feed speedy centre Noah Renaud for a quick two-goal Stars lead. Next, it was Ryan Holzel who would knock in a loose puck from a scramble off the shot from Colin Leardi and the Stars were starting to roll. Before the clock expired in the opening period, Ciccone would intercept a clearing pass in the Ranger zone and his backhand shot would be enough to chase the Ranger starting goalie and bring in the backup tender.In the second period, the Ranges showed some life as they put a pair of goals into the Stars’ net but that’s as close as they would get as the Stars would finish off the Rangers with a trio of markers in the final frame. Santarossa and Burns combined to set up Holzel and his shot from the side of the right post would put the Stars up by three and only two minutes later, a Leardi shot off the backboards was deposited into the Rangers’ net by Holzel for his third of the game. Just over a minute later, a pass from Dean Patterson along the blue line to defense partner Zak Parlette would result in Parlette’s blast from the point denting the twine for the 7-2 Stars victory. The series continues this Thursday at the WFCU Centre in Windsor and if the Stars can come out victorious, then they can possibly wrap up the series with a home win on Saturday night in Amherstburg.
