One game after suffering their first loss of the season, the Amherstburg Stars Select 7 hockey team rebounded with a complete team effort to get back on the winning track. The Stars got 6 goals from 5 different players and held the Sabres off the score sheet to come away with a 6 – 0 victory.
The Stars got off to a very good start in the first with strong defensive efforts from their defense and forward combinations, so much that they prevented a strong LaSalle Sabres team from taking any shots on net throughout the period. Andrew Digiovanni made a strong defensive play early in the first which resulted in him stripping the puck from the Sabre’s forward. The puck ended up on the stick of Noah Duggan who made a nice pass to Drake McGowan who then buried the puck into the Sabre’s net to get the Stars on the board at 2:12.
The remainder of the first period featured a lot of play in the Sabre’s end of the ice thanks to the hard work of Rees Kozar. Rees battled hard for the puck at both end of the ice and on all shifts which ended up earning him the “hard hat award” for the hardest working player of the game. The first period also saw great scoring chances by Sebastien Tronchin, Drake McGowan, Drew Booker, Jake Orchard and a great effort by Carson Allen. Gavin Meloche made some great defensive plays, Hayden Bondy made a great shot block, Cameron Sinasac made numerous defensive stops and great dump ins, Alexandra Seagris displayed her great skating ability in beating the Sabre’s forwards to loss pucks and Layne Sinasac rounded out the great defensive display with several key plays herself.
The second period opened with the Sabres pressing hard. At 1:59 of the second, a Sabre’s forward came flying in on the right wing and let a great wrist shot go only to be denied by Brock Boyko who made a great save on the play. That save kept the score at 1 – 0 Stars but not for long as Colin Cote followed his own shot to the net and banged in the loose puck to make it 2 – 0 at 2:38. That goal seemed to light a spark under the Star’s forwards as immediately after, Kieran Thrasher scored on a hard wrist shot at 3:31 after receiving a great feed from Sebastien Tronchin. Noah Duggan then netted the puck from the right wing at 3:46 after a great play by Drake McGowan to hold the puck in the zone. McGowan then scored his second of the game at 3:59 on a nice stick handling break-away.
After scoring 4 goals in 1 minute and 21 seconds, it was time for the Stars to display their defensive prowess again. Cameron Sinasac made a great play on a centering attempt by the Sabres and Gavin Meloche, Andrew Digiovanni and Layne Sinasac continued their strong defensive play by stripping the puck away from the Sabre’s forwards. The Sabres kept pressing and were finally able to get a hard shot off from between the face off circles but Jayden Duchesne came up strong in making the initial save and then robbed the Sabre’s forward of a sure goal on a great wrap around attempt. Noah Duggan also contributed to the defensive effort by showing some great hustle to get back to break up a sure scoring opportunity by the Sabres.
The third period opened quickly with the Stars getting their 6th goal of the game by Jake Orchard at 1:08 after directing home a great feed by Rees Kozar. Immediately after this, the Sabres came back with two great scoring attempts only to be denied again by Duchesne. The entire team really stepped up their defensive efforts and Duchesne made several more great saves to finish off the period and preserve the shut-out for the Stars
